When Twitter gives you a headache...

I use Tweetdeck, because it helps me with the information overload problem.

I really like Tweetdeck, and in fact, they just released their latest version which has even more improvements.

If you spend a lot of time on Twitter, in my personal opinion this is the best desktop app out there for it.

Also, remember, that Tweetdeck can be installed on multiple PCs and the groups can be synchronized, including your iPhone.

You can download Tweetdeck from their website at: http://tweetdeck.com/beta/

As always, if you have any further questions, or have any Tweetdeck tips of your own, don’t forget to share in our Facebook Group.

Enjoy!

In West Philadelphia born and raised

(download)

Speech recognition comes free as part of Windows Vista, and is sadly a forgotten but very useful feature built right into Windows.

It is great for people who may have Repetitive Strain Injury, or dont like typing in general, or just want to get their work typed up real fast.
I, myself am a pretty fast typer, but still use speech recognition for large documents as i can get the work done much faster.

Speech Recognition in Vista can also be used for ordinary commands to actually "drive" windows such as launch programs and other ordinary operations you would do inside of Windows, however, for me personally, i have found that a little difficult to get used to. I find i am faster with the mouse. You should try it for yourself though, you might like it.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me in the Facebook Group. I'll be happy to help you.

How to use Gmail to check emails from multiple email accounts

(download)

Gmail can be used to retrieve emails from multiple email accounts.

All you need are your POP3 server details which are available from your existing email provider.
The advantage of doing things this way, is that you dont have to check all your email accounts separately, which saves time and hassle.

Additionally, if you ever decide to move all your email permanently to gmail, you can import your old emails and contacts from the major tier email providers such as Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL, and your POP3 service provider if it supports it.

My apologies for the heavy blurring in places, but that was to protect sensitive contact information.
Feel free to ask me any questions in my Facebook Group if you need any further help in setting this up

Enjoy

You can download Windows Live Writer for free from this link

Windows Live Writer

When you first load Windows Live Writer, you will need to add your blog details, these are the same as the ones you use to log into your blog's admin panel.

If you are using Wordpress don't forget to enable XML-RPC in your Wordpress site.
To do that you need to:

Log in to your blog with the admin account, and go to Settings, and then Writing.

Check the box next to “XML-RPC” on the Writing options page, and save the settings.

Why I love Adobe Lightroom

(download)

Apologies for the slightly distorted video picture. I'm working on a large widescreen monitor and had to scale the picture down.

Adobe Lightroom is a tailored version of Adobe Photoshop designed specifically for Photographers.

You can see more examples of my Photography fun on my Flickr Page. These were all processed using Adobe Lightroom.

As I mentioned in the video, there is alot more to Photography and working with Lightroom than this, but i just wanted to demonstrate its power.

How i've kept my PC virus free for years

(download)

Essentially, all malware such as spyware, viruses and Trojans are just normal software programs, except they have been designed to do malicious things to your operating system.

Viruses can only infect your PC when they have they have been given the permission to run, and have sufficient privileges to install themselves on your PC.

The way they grant themselves permission to run is by ‘tricking’ you into accepting their installation. This can be through various means, such as asking you to click a link on the web, or presenting themselves as an attachment from a friends email, and so on.

If you are not logged in as the administrator, even if you fall prey to the ‘trick’, the virus still won’t have sufficient privileges to run and thus cannot infect your PC.

No anti-virus software has a 100% detection rate therefore prevention is always the best cure, and remember some viruses are smart enough to disable your antivirus software.

That said, there also some other precautions that I take to further safeguard my system.

1.    I use AntiVirus software with a higher detection rate as well as a better engine.

My two favourite are:-

a.    Avast Antivirus (also happens to be free)

b.    Kaspersky

(if you are wondering why my video contains Norton Antivirus, it’s because of other experiments im currently running)

2.    I always keep my Windows Firewall switched on.
Some people will tell you, you need higher grade firewall software, but I’ve always felt Windows firewall is good enough. Again, no firewall software is completely bullet proof.

3.    I curb my temptation for downloading music or videos using peer-to-peer software.
Out of the thousands of PCs that I have seen plagued by viruses, the first question I always ask is “Do you have Limewire installed?”

Limewire is the bane of the IT Technicians life. A large proportion of files downloaded using Limewire are infected with Malware.

4.    I always manually scan (for viruses) each file that I download, receive as an attachment or copy from someone, using my anti-virus software’s manual scan function.

5.    I stay away from adverts of software that promise to remove spyware for me. (They’re normally infected programs in themselves.)

Should i buy Mac or PC?

A few months ago, someone asked the question about whether they should go Mac or PC when considering a new Laptop.

The response I sent to that person is below.

My Response:

Choosing between Mac and PC is really just a matter of preference and budget.

Macs provide a richer user experience overall, but are expensive.
Generally speaking provide much less headache as they aren’t prone to the overall degradation in performance you find in Windows over time due to the plethora of spyware and viruses.

Windows vista really doesn’t live up to the hype, but Windows is the most versatile platform out there due to the sheer ubiquity, and PCs overall are much much cheaper.

Good place to buy laptops is www.ebuyer.co.uk , stick with brands like HP, IBM/Lenovo, Toshiba or Asus. If you're buying brand new.

Stay away from brands like Packard Bell, Acer and Advent.

If you're buying Mac, its either the Apple website or an Apple retail store.

All that said, if you're not in a major hurry, i'd hold out till after October as both platforms are introducing milestone releases.

Windows 7 for the PC

and Snow Leopard for the Mac.

Here is a post from another member of this forum:

Person 1: (He bought a Mac)

“..I went from XP to Mac and just as I was getting used to using the Mac I decided to install XP on my Mac because I was getting annoyed with the fact that excel and powerpoint don't work the same on the Mac with compatibility issues as well as the keyboard shortcuts don't work. And then, the final nail in the coffin was when I found out my Blackberry software didn't work on a Mac. I thought this is gonna be more hassle than it's worth.

Most people who have used a Mac love it, but I'd say you're best of sticking to a PC if you used Excel, Powerpoint or Word regularly…”

He is in fact right. Microsoft Office applications are not as good on the Mac as they are on the PC.
